What's Google Know

Throughout this book we’ve focused mainly on how to perform searches,
interpret the results, and filter those results to find what you’re looking for.
Though we’ve used plenty of different examples for those searches, we haven’t
focused on specific content short of the broad categories of content, such as
videos versus news.
However, there are some specific types of information that Google is very
good at providing—not just links to sites that have your answer, but to the
answers themselves. Also, even though we’ve focused on English-language
results in this book, there are ways with Google to expand your search to more
than one language for results.
In this final chapter, we present many of these options and let you know
just how to take advantage of them.

Google Search Features
Beyond the advanced search features and additional database searches that
Google makes available, Google provides many built-in shortcuts via web
search, known as “search features.” Below are the vast majority of the ones
that were available at the time of this writing.

Google Knows Math
Just type in a mathematical formula and you’ll get your answer, as shown in
. 12.1. Enter a formula that results in a graph and you’ll get the graph
too, sometimes in three dimensions

Results for (sqrt(cos(x))*cos(400*x)+sqrt (abs(x))-0.4)*(4-x*x)^0.1

Google Knows Money
Need a quick currency conversion? Type in the amount and currency, then the
new currency
Not only are you presented with the conversion rate, you’re also presented
with a graph of the exchange rate over time. Also, as with the unit conversion,
there is also an interactive part to currency conversion results. From here
you can change the amount in either currency and have the other one update
automatically
.
Google Knows Definitions
Simply type define followed by the word you want defined, and you will receive both a definition and also links to additional sites
that can provide more information about that word.

Google Knows Mov ies
Search on a movie name or just movie to see theater locations and showtimes
in your area, as shown in . 12.10. For each movie you’ll be presented
with the title (hyperlinked to additional information and show locations for
that film), the film’s length, rating, and genre, and a link to the trailer. Clicking
the “Show more movies” link will extend the list of movies displayed
and also give you a “See all movies” link, which takes you to
a page with many more details and options for finding where and when your
film

To find out when a movie will be in the theaters, search on the movie name
with the phrase “release date”. This will also work for video
games.
For a list of movies that an actor has been in, search on the actor’s name
and movies. The top of the results will appear as a side-scrolling
list of the movies—with their DVD covers serving as links to a new search on
the movie itself—while still maintaining the original list of the actor’ movies
above the search results.

It’s a game based on the fact that Kevin Bacon has been in so many movies
that you can link any actor through their film roles to him within six steps.
The result is called the actor’s Bacon Number. In 2012, Google added the
Bacon Number search tool—search for any actor with the phrase “Bacon Number”
and it will automatically calculate the actor’s number, showing you the
connections between them and Kevin Bacon.

Google Knows Music
As with actors and movies, for a list of albums that a band or musician has
released, search on the band’s or musician’s name and albums.
The top of the results will appear as a side-scrolling list of the albums, with
their covers serving as links to a new search on the album itself—again, while
still maintaining the original list of the band’s albums above the search results.

Google Knows Numbers
Google can automatically recognize several types of numbers. These include
UPS (United Parcel Service), FedEx, and USPS (United States Postal Service)
tracking numbers , as well as VINs (vehicle identification numbers)
and UPCs (Universal Product Codes) . Just type any of
these into Google to get a link to the results you need.

Google Knows the Weather
Start your search with the word weather followed by a city and state or zip
code to receive the current and forecasted weather for that area .
You’ll also be provided with links to pages with additional information such as
the Weather Channel, Weather Underground, and AccuWeather.

Google Knows Sunrise and Sunset
If you’re wondering when the sun is going to rise or set, just ask Google. If you
omit the location, Google will attempt to . out where you are and give
you the time for that location.
Google Knows the Time
What time it is in San Francisco? Enter time and the location to find out .

Google Knows Holidays
When you want to know the day or date of a particular holiday, just ask
Google. For example, let’s say that you want to know what day of the week
Halloween falls on this year. Just search for when is halloween; at the top of
the search results. You can also search for
some of those more obscure holidays, like National Mole Day. Note that many
holidays are region-specific, so you may see different holidays depending on
your location settings.

Google Knows the Score
Wondering what the score was of your favorite team’s last game or when their
next game is scheduled? Just enter the name of your team to find out . If the game is currently on, you’ll be provided with the most current
statistics available. If you’re interested in seeing more of a team’s upcoming
schedule, just click the “+ Show more games” link.

Google Knows When the Ground Shakes
Heard about a recent earthquake somewhere in the world and want to know
more? Type in earthquake and a location to get the data you’re looking for. For
information on recent quakes, don’t specify a location .

Google Knows Public Data
Google has access to an immense amount of public data—so much that we
couldn’t possibly cover it all here. But as just one example, enter population
and a location. This provides you with the current population ., that .’s
date and source, and a graph of the population change over time

Google knows food
If you’re looking for nutritional information for basic foods try doing a simple
search on the name of that food. Searches for natural foods like apples, grapes.
Google is adding more foods all the
time so something that receives no similar results now may do so in the future.
However, don’t expect to get detailed nutritional information for prepackaged
foods for the foreseeable future.
Google knows when to stop
Need a simple countdown? Just tell Google to set timer for and then enter the
length of time you need. At the top of your search results  you’ll
see a live countdown timer along with a blue line that fills in as the time runs
out, stop and restart links, and a speaker icon to turn off the audible alert that
will occur when time runs out. When the time does run out, the stop link will
turn into an OK link, which you’ll need to click to turn off the alarm.

Google knows where to begin
Google has a little-known separate Web site titled “What do you love?” (http://
www.wdyl.com). Head over there and you’ll be asked to answer the question
“What do you love?”

Election Results 2014

Mumbai, May 16:  BJP president Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh in-charge and close BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s close confidant Amit Shah address media after BJP’s historic victory in Lok Sabha elections 2014. Rajnath Singh says India has voted for change. Many people have worked for this. BJP’s stature has become bigger than Congress and happy and satisfied with the results.

Rajnath Singh attributes the victory to good governance and development. This is the beginning of a new era. BJP no longer remains urban party and now represents all the caste and religions.

The 16th Lok Sabha Elections have spelled doom for the Congress party. The current trends and results have clearly shown the door to Congress party. Manmohan Singh, the outgoing, in a respectful gesture, called Narendra Modi and congratulated for his win. The BJP is leading on 328 seats whereas the Congress party has been reduced to 67 seats. The Others are leading on 148 seats as of now.

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi has finally set out of his house to meet his mother after the results of Varanasi and Vadodara are out. Modi has won comprehensively from Vadodara with a margin of approx 6  lakh votes, whereas in Varanasi he has defeated the former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal by a margin of 1,50,000 votes. The BJP is maintaining its lead on 323 seats, whereas Congress is stuck near the 75 mark.

It seems like the Modi wave has decimated the Congress led UPA alliance in the 16th Lok Sabha Elections. The BJP is soaring high and higher by every passing hour. The party has crossed the 320 mark and is leading on 321 seats. The Congress has crashed to a new low as it’s not able to cross the 80 seat mark. The social media has gone berserk and Rahul and Kejriwal are topping the mockery list. Arvind Kejriwal, Shazia Ilmi and Kr. Vishwas have all failed to make a mark, as they’re currently trailing in their constituencies.

The Lok Sabha Elections 2014 has been a disaster for the Congress  party as far as the current trends are suggesting. The BJP led NDA alliance  has got a further boost as it is leading on 310 seats now. The Congress has managed to breach 75 seat mark and is leading on 76 seats. The Others party is leading on 139 seats whereas the AAP is stable on 3. In another blow to the Congress party, big names like Milind Deora, Salman Khursheed, Ajay Maken, and Ambika Soni are all trailing in their constituencies.

According to the latest results of the 16th Lok Sabha Elections, the BJP led NDA alliance has been maintaining its lead over the Congress led UPA alliance. The lead has been stagnant and the BJP is still continuing to lead on 300 seats  whereas the Congress has slipped below the 75 seat mark. In a jolt to AAP, the party was earlier leading by seats to which the lead is reduced to 2 seats.

As the picture gets clearer, the BJP has been leading on all the 7 seats of NCT region Of Delhi, and all the 26 seats of Gujarat and even on 25 seats of Madhya Pradesh. If the current trends are anything to go by, the Congress has been completely routed in BJP-ruled states. The major embarrassment for the Congress party is that have not been able to lead on any seat in Delhi. Even Congress’ heavy weight Kapil Sibal is trailing in Chandni Chowk.

The second hour has brought some good news  for the BJP led NDA alliance as the trends are clearly in their favor. Going by the latest trends the NDA has been leading on 302 seats. The Congress led UPA has not been able to cross the 80 mark yet. The second hour has some good news for the AAP also as they are currently leading on 4 seats. The Others category are leading on 137 seats. The BJP man-in-charge, Amit Shah, has given the party a big boost in Hindu-heartland Uttar Pradesh, as the party is currently in 55 constituencies.

BJP looks set to storm to power if the early trends are any indication. The saffron combine is leading on over 100 seats while the Congress was leading on 53. BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is leading from Varanasi while Rahul Gandhi was trailing in Amethi and Smriti Irani of BJP is leading.

Counting begins for the marathon 9-phase elections for 16th Lok Sabha from 8 AM on Friday for all the 543 Lok Sabha seats across the country. India will get to know who is going to form the next government in a couple of hours. The exit polls have predicted victory for BJP-led NDA and unless the exit polls are way off the mark, Narendra Modi is set to storm to power. The ruling Congress-led UPA is predicted to give its worst performance since 1977.

Nearly 8000 candidates, including top leaders like Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal were in the fray, in the largest-ever electoral exercise held in the Indian history. These were the first Lok Sabha elections when the option of ‘none of the above’ or NOTA was introduced on the EVMs following Supreme Court directions to ensure secrecy of voters who use this option.

Enchanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you
enable it. The new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the
ASELP (AlgebraicCode Excitation Linear Prediction) compression

technology. This technology allows for much great voice quality in the
same number of bits as the older Full Rate CODEC. The older technology
was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with Regular Pulse
Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the
network, so they can charge you more) - Talk-time is reduced with about
5%

Nokia Speed Trap Detector Urban Legend spread by Nokia Engineers ;^)
The settings for radar speed traps detector. Your Nokia cell phone can be
programmed to pick up radar speed traps, when programmed your cell
phone picks up the radar and alerts you on the message alert tone. (
Doesn't work with Nokia 7110! )
1. Enter your menu
2. Select settings
3. Select security settings
4. Select closed user group
5. Select on
6. Enter 00000
7. Press ok
8. Clear back to normal, within a few seconds your phone will display a
radar sign with five zero's next to it. It is now activated.
Unfortunately only Nokia phones have this function. The Cell Phone info
display needs to be de-activated. Settings -> Phone Settings -> Cell Info
display. Each time you turn off your phone, or even each time you loose
contact with your carrier, you'll have to activate it again... It is done using
steps 1 through 5 above, but the number (00000) will be already on the
field as a default.
The James Bond Trick
If you short-circuit the left middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all
connections touching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset"
will be activated. Before you do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the
headset profile and set the ringing volume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone
for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Just place it under a table
in a room and call it. The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen
to what people are saying! Network Monitor
There is a hidden menu inside your Nokia phone. If you want to activate it, you'll
have to re-program some chips inside of your phone.
Check your software version. You can only continue if you have v4.33, v4.73 or
v5.24.
Take apart the phone.
De-solder the EEPROM (ATMEL AT 24C64)
Read out the data with an EEPROM programmer and save it to a file (Backup)
If you have v.33 or v4.73, change the address "03B8" from "00" to "FF"
If you have v5.24 then change the address "0378" from "00" to "FF"
Write the new data to the EEPROM and solder it back to the phone
Power on your phone and you should have "Netmonitor" enabled.
The Network Monitor gives you the following information:
Carrier number, MS RX Level in DBM, Received signal quality, MS TX power
level, C1 (Path loss criterion, used for cell selection and reselection). The range is -99
to 99, RTL (Radio link timeout), Timeslot, Indication of the transmitter status,
Information on the Network parameters, TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber
Identity), Cell identification (Cell ID, Number of cells being used), MCC (Mobile
country code), MCN (Mobile network code), LAC (Location area code), Ciphering
(On/Off), Hopping (On/Off), DTX (On/Off), Discard cell barred information.

GSM Network Services Command Strings
When various network functions are selected via the cellphone's menu using the
keypad, the cellphone automatically generates the corresponding GSM network
command string and transmits it to the network. These commands can however be
manually entered via the keypad.
Each command is prefixed with either one or two * or # characters as follows:
** Register and Activate
* Activate
## De-Register (and Deactivate)

Cell Broadcast
While Short Message Service (SMS) can be configured as a personal service, Cell
Broadcast is a general service which is designed for subscribers of a specific cell or
topic. For example, a subscriber to cell 050 in England will receive information on
the GSM tower currently being used by their phone. This new concept brings a
whole new meaning to the term mobile communications as the phone is now able to
receive information such as share prices or weather updates without the need of
data cards and computers. At present the following message types exist (note: this
may vary from carrier to carrier and some carriers may charge for this service):
Code Title
000 Index
010 Flashes
020 Hospitals
022 Doctors
024 Pharmacy
030 Long Distant Road Reports
032 Local Road Reports

056 Directory Inquiries (national)
057 Directory Inquiries (international)
058 Customer Care (national)

In the future one will be able to control each individual call by use of the following
service codes. To do this the user has to insert the service code in front of the last #
in the MMI command above.

Enhanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The
new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the ASELP (Algebraic
Code Excitation Linear Prediction) compression technology. This technology allows
for much great voice quality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate
CODEC. The older technology was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with
Regular Pulse Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space
on the network, so they can charge you more) - Talk-time is reduced by about 5%
when using the ERF option.

These codes will work on most Nokia Mobile Phones to activate/deactivate advanced hidden functions that you can’t change through the phone menu

One useful function that all Nokia’s I’ve owned have is “Cell Info Display” which can usually be found in the phones “Display settings” (eg: in a Nokia 1600) or “Phone Settings” (eg: in a Nokia 3315)

If your network supports it, when “Cell Info Display” is enabled, it will display the name of the base station your mobile is currently connected to on the screen. eg: when i’m walking around the city it says “Sydney CBD” and when i’m at home it displays the name of my suburb.

Note:

To display “p” press “*” three times within one second, To display “w” press “*” four times within one second, To display “+” press twice “*” within less than a second

*3370# / #3370# Activate / Deactivate Enhanced Full Rate Codec (EFR) - Your phone uses the best sound quality but talk time is reduced my approx. 5%

Top 10 Windows 8 tips and tricks

Customize your tiles

Windows 8 tilesMake the most of your Windows Start screen tiles by adjusting the sizes, where they are located, and what is listed.

Move any tile by clicking and dragging the tile. While moving a tile, if you need a larger view of the Start screen move the tile towards the top or bottom of the screen to zoom out.
Use your mouse wheel to scroll left-to-right through your tiles.
Any Desktop shortcut or program can be pinned to the Start screen by right-clicking the icon and choosing Pin to Start.
In the bottom right-hand corner of the start screen is a magnifying glass with tiles, click this icon to get a zoomed out view of your Start screen. In this view, if you right-click on a group of tiles you'll be given the option to name group, which can be useful if you have a group of related tiles (e.g. games). In this view, you can also click and drag a group to organize your tile groups.
Create a new speed bump between tile groups by moving a tile to a speed bump.
Resize any User tile or Live tile by right-clicking the tile and choosing resize.
If there is a tile you want on your Taskbar, right-click the tile and choose Pin to taskbar.
Show admin applications on the Start screen by clicking Settings in Charms, click Settings, and change the Show administrative tools from No to Yes.
In Internet Explorer 10, you can also pin any of your favorite web pages to your Start Screen.

Know your hot corners

The corners on your screen are hot corners and give you access to different Windows features. Below, is a brief explanation of each of these corners.

Bottom Left-hand corner

The bottom left-hand hot corner of the screen will allow you to access the Start screen, if you're in the Start screen and have the Desktop open, this corner will open the Desktop from the Start screen.

Tip: Right-clicking in the left hand corner will open the power user menu.

Top-left corner of the screen

Moving the mouse to the top-left corner and then down will display all the apps running on the computer. Clicking and dragging any of these apps to the left or right-hand side of the screen will snap that app to that side of the screen. Each of these open app icons can also be right-clicked to close or snap.

Right-hand side of the screen

On the full right-hand side of the screen will be given access to the Windows Charms.

Taking advantage of search

The Search in Windows 8 has been significantly improved when compared to all previous versions of Windows. To search for a file or run a program in Windows 8 from the Start screen just start typing what you're trying to find or want to run.

As you begin typing, the results will start appearing on the left-hand side. In addition to being able to search for files and run programs, the Search also supports limiting the search to apps such as Finance, People, Maps, Photos, Mail, Music, Videos, Weather, and much more. If what you are searching for is not a file or program, click on the app you wish to use as the search. For example, if you were searching for "New York" and selected the Weather App you would be shown the weather in New York, NY.

By default, Search organizes the available Apps by how frequently they are used and then in alphabetical order. If you want to keep your favorite app at the top of the Search list, right-click the app and choose Pin. Pinning the app will lock it in place regardless of how often it is used. If there is an app you don't want (e.g. Finance) you can turn on and off any of the search apps through the PC settings, which is found under the Settings in the Charms.

Bonus tip: The Search is also found through Charms and can also be opened by pressing Windows key + F.

Running two apps side by side

Any app can be pinned to the left or right-hand side of the screen. For example, open the People app and then press the Windows Key + . (period) to move that app to the right-hand side of the screen, pressing the same keys again will move it to the left-hand side, and pressing the same keys again will make it full screen. While an app is pinned, any other app or program can be opened and loaded into the available space on the screen. For example, in the below picture, we've opened a browser window and have the People app running to monitor our social networks.

Windows 8 People

Any open app can also be pinned using your mouse by clicking at the top of the tile and dragging it to the left or right-hand side of the screen.

Bonus tip: The Desktop can also be pinned to the left or right-hand side of the screen.

Note: In order for snap to work properly your resolution must be at least 1,366 x 768.

Windows 8 Task Manager

The Windows 8 Task Manager has been significantly improved over previous versions of Windows. Some of the new changes include showing a total percent usage at the top of your Processes, which makes it easier to determine total memory and CPU usage, improved Performance graphs, a Startup tab to see startup processes and their impact to system performance, and the App history tab (as shown below) that gives you the total resources an app has used over a period of time. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to start exploring the new Task Manager.

Windows 8 Task Manager

Use a picture password to log into your computer

Windows 8 includes a new feature called Picture password, which allows you to authenticate with the computer using a series of gestures that include circles, straight lines, and taps. Enable this feature if you want a new way to access your computer or have a hard time with passwords.

Open the Windows Charms.
Click Settings and then More PC settings
In the PC settings window click Users and then select Create a picture password
Bonus tip: A four digit pin password can also be created and used to access your computer.

Take advantage of Windows 8 apps

Windows 8 comes included with several apps to help you get the most from your computer. Below are just a few of the included apps.

People

Microsoft touts the People feature in Windows 8 because they understand how many people are using social networks today. In the People feature you'll be able to connect your Windows computer to all the major social networks including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Once connected, you can pin the people app and monitor your social network (as shown below), use People in Search to find people, and get an overview of what is happening in all your social networks.

Windows 8 People

Reader

The Reader app will give you PDF support right out of the box.

SkyDrive

The SkyDrive app will give you access to the Microsoft cloud service SkyDrive, which allows you to store your photos, documents, and other files in the cloud and access or share those files with any computer with Internet access.

Store

Take advantage of the Windows Store and install one or more of the thousands of available apps designed for Windows 8. The Store is found in the Start screen, or use Search to search the Store app for any apps that you are trying to find.
